When to hire a marketing consultant

When to hire a marketing consultant

Hiring a marketing consultant is the right move for some businesses and the wrong one for others. The difference usually comes down to where you are, not how big you are.

When it makes sense

The clearest signal is when you have a strategy problem, not an execution problem.

Execution problems look like this: you know what you need to do, you just don't have time or bandwidth to do it. In that case, you probably need a freelancer or an agency, not a consultant. Someone to do the work.

Strategy problems look different. You're doing things. Posting, running ads, maybe sending emails. But nothing is connecting. You don't know which effort is working, if any. You can't describe your marketing strategy in a sentence. You're making decisions based on what feels right rather than what the data says.

That's a strategy problem. And a consultant is the right hire for it.

A few other situations where it makes sense:

You're launching something new and don't want to waste the budget figuring it out as you go. A consultant can compress the learning curve significantly.

You have a team that's executing but no one leading the strategy. The work is happening but it's not coherent. That gap is expensive.

You've tried a few things and they didn't work. Before spending more, it's worth having someone outside your head look at what you've built and tell you why.

When it doesn't

If you don't have a budget to act on recommendations, a consultant will frustrate you. You'll get a roadmap you can't execute. That's not useful for anyone.

If you're pre-revenue and still figuring out your offer, strategy work is premature. The marketing problem almost always turns out to be a positioning problem at that stage.

If you want someone to do the work, not advise on it, a consultant isn't the right fit. Be specific about what you need before you hire anyone.

What to look for

The most important thing is someone who asks questions before making recommendations. A consultant who pitches solutions in the first conversation without understanding your business is selling, not consulting.

You also want someone who can connect marketing decisions to business outcomes. Not "we'll post three times a week" but "here's why that activity is going to move this number."

I work with small businesses in Phoenix and Scottsdale that are past the early stages and ready to build something with a strategy behind it. If that's where you are, my services page is a good place to start.
